RECA Extension Act of 2024
Summary · Congressional Research Service (nonpartisan)
This bill extends the authorization of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) fund and the statute of limitations for filing a claim under RECA until two years after the date of the bill's enactment. RECA provides restitution to uranium miners and other individuals who may have developed cancer or other specified diseases after being exposed to radiation released from atomic weapons testing or uranium mining, milling, or transportation in connection with U.S. nuclear weapons programs. Under current law, the fund is authorized until June 7, 2024, and the statute of limitations requires all claims under RECA to be filed no later than June 7, 2024. (Because the statute of limitations expires on a Saturday, the Department of Justice has announced that it will process all applications postmarked by June 10, 2024.)
