Section 1. Short title

This Act may be cited as the Know What’s on the Tray Act of 2026.

(a) School lunch program requirements

Section 9(a) of the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act (42 U.S.C. 1758(a)) is amended by adding at the end the following:

(A) In general

A school participating in the school lunch program under this Act or the school breakfast program under section 4 of the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 (42 U.S.C. 1773) shall make available to the public on the website of such school, or the school district for such school, information on any menu item or food offered or served in a lunch or breakfast offered or served by such school not later than 7 days prior to the date on which such school offers or serves such lunch or breakfast.

(B) Contents

The information required under subparagraph (A) shall include—

(i) the name of any menu item or food described in such paragraph;

(ii) a list of each ingredient used in each such menu item or food;

(iii) the manufacturer or producer of each such menu item or food;

(iv) the location in which each such menu item or food is manufactured or produced; and

(v) whether each such menu item or food is—

(I) locally sourced; or

(II) manufactured or produced on a family farm.

(C) Updates

If a school described in subparagraph (A) changes a menu item or food described in such subparagraph, such school shall promptly update the information published under such subparagraph.

(b) Regulations

Not later than 180 days after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Agriculture shall issue such rules as may be necessary to provide assistance with complying with the amendment made by this section to schools participating in a covered program.

(c) Covered program defined

In this Act, the term covered program means—

(1) the school lunch program established under the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act (42 U.S.C. 1751 et seq.); or

(2) the school breakfast program authorized under section 4 of the Child Nutrition Act of 1966 (42 U.S.C. 1773).

(d) Applicability

The amendments made by this Act shall apply to any breakfast or lunch served by a school participating in a covered program on or after the first day of the school year that begins not less than 18 months after the date of enactment of this Act.
