Section 1. Short title
This Act may be cited as the Passports for Purple Hearts and Medals of Honor Act.
Section 2. Exemption from certain passport fees of an individual who was awarded the Purple Heart or Medal of Honor
Section 1 of the Act of June 1, 1920 (22 U.S.C. 214; commonly referred to as the Passport Act of 1920), is amended—
(1) in subsection (a)(2)—
(A) by redesignating subparagraph (E) as subparagraph (F); and
(B) by inserting after subparagraph (D) the following new subparagraph:
(D) from an individual who was awarded the Purple Heart or the Medal of Honor; or
(2) by adding at the end the following new subsection:
(c) The Secretary of State, acting through the Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, shall enter into a memorandum of understanding with the Secretary of Defense in order to assist the Assistant Secretary with implementation of the exemption described in subparagraph (D) of subsection (a)(2). Such memorandum shall include assistance establishing appropriate documentation requirements for eligible passport applications and renewals, and a mechanism for the relevant Department of Defense office to assist the Assistant Secretary regarding the verification of such documentation through cross-referencing with the service records of the applicant at issue.
