Section 1. Short title
This Act may be cited as the Saving Students with Software Act.
(a) In general
Not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Education shall establish a program (in this section referred to as the Program) under which the Secretary may award grants to States to assist with the cost of suicide prevention software for use in elementary schools and secondary schools.
(b) Applications
To be eligible for a grant under the Program, a State shall submit to the Secretary an application in such form, at such time, and containing such information and assurances as the Secretary determines appropriate.
(c) Definitions
In this section:
(1) Elementary school
The term elementary school has the meaning given such term in section 8101 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 7801).
(2) Secondary school
The term secondary school has the meaning given such term in section 8101 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 7801).
(3) State
The term State means each of the several States, the District of Columbia, each territory or possession of the United States, and each federally recognized Indian Tribe.
(4) Suicide prevention software
The term suicide prevention software means software that may be installed on a device provided by an elementary school or secondary school for student use and that has the ability to alert school personnel if a student types a word or phrase relating to self-harm or suicide.
