Section 1. Short title
This Act may be cited as the Preserve Geographic Names Act.
(a) In general
The Board on Geographic Names established by section 2 of the Act of July 25, 1947 (61 Stat. 456; 43 U.S.C. 364a), is abolished and all functions of such Board are terminated.
(b) Conforming amendments
The Act of July 25, 1947 (61 Stat. 456; 43 U.S.C. 364 et seq.) is amended—
(1) in the first section of that Act—
(A) by striking conjointly with the Board on Geographic Names, as hereinafter provided,; and
(B) by striking, except that such authority as relates to the final approval or review of actions of the Board on Geographic Names shall be exercised by him, or his Under or Assistant Secretaries;
(2) by striking sections 2 and 3 and redesignating sections 4 through 8 as sections 2 through 6, respectively;
(3) in section 2, as so redesignated by paragraph (2) of this subsection—
(A) by striking, and he shall provide a place of meeting and staff assistance to the Board. The staff shall be responsible to the Secretary, who shall prescribe its relations to the Board and the committees of the Board; and
(B) by striking, upon the recommendation of the Board,;
(4) in section 3, as so redesignated by paragraph (2) of this subsection, by striking in the name of the Board; and
(5) in section 4, as so redesignated by paragraph (2) of this subsection, by striking, and the duties of said Board are transferred to the Board herein created, and all departments, bureaus, and agencies of the Federal Government shall refer all geographic names and problems to the said Board for the purpose of eliminating duplication of work, personnel, and authority.
